Alpha & Omega Sculptures for Edina Community Lutheran Church

In April of 2000, Edina Community Lutheran Church, Edina, Minnesota commissioned me to do 2 works of art for their church. They needed a Cross for the altar area and something for the skylight above the Baptismal Font. They requested that the altar sculpture to be scripture based and the skylight art work to evolve from the altar piece.

Alpha & Omega — 2000
11’ x 6’ x 8"
African ribbon stripe mahagony, indigo stains, steel, art glass, paint

I chose the “Alpha & Omega" as my creative source:

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." (Revelation 22:13, New Oxford Annotated Bible). I love this verse because to me it means, with God all things are possible.

Water Shell Skylight — 2000
4’ x 3’-10"
Art glass, steel, paint

For the Baptismal Font Skylight, I traced the shape of the Omega over and over until the Water shell formed itself. Afterwards, I found that the shell is the early Christian symbol for Baptism and Pilgramage.

If you're interested in looking at a freestanding sculpture that I did, which is based on this piece, click on the link: Alpha & Omega - freestanding sculpture.
