City Map Collection

My work is about place as memory because what is absent is not forgotten.

I think of geometry as a place-maker. Geometry creates reality through primal shapes: triangle, circle and square, which are found in labyrinths.

For years I built labyrinths out of glass, light, steel, wood and paint. Through the labyrinths I discovered ancient city maps and saw how geometry was used to organize streets. From medieval  to modern maps, one truth emerged:  Geometry makes clear our here and there.

Upon viewing an old map of Detroit, is when place as memory began in the form of my city map paintings.
